How to Stay Safe and Healthy in the Summer Heat - Texas MedClinic Urgent Care

Summer in Texas means long days, sunny skies and soaring temperatures. Just remember that summer heat can lead to serious health concerns if you’re not careful. Heat-related illnesses like dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke can develop quickly, especially when temperatures soar into the high 90s and beyond. Knowing how to protect yourself and your loved ones can help you enjoy the season safely.

If you or someone you know is feeling the effects of summer heat, remember that help is available. Texas MedClinic Urgent Care is here for you with convenient walk-in clinics across the state.

Understanding the Risks of Summer Heat

Heat-related symptoms can come on quickly and may be life-threatening if ignored. Early warning signs like dizziness, heavy sweating, nausea or muscle cramps can progress to more serious symptoms such as confusion, rapid heartbeat, dry or hot skin and fainting. These may be signs of dehydration, heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

  • Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in. Symptoms include dry mouth, dizziness and dark-colored urine.
  • Heat exhaustion is commonly marked by heavy sweating, weakness, nausea and rapid pulse. It can progress to heatstroke if not treated.
  • Heatstroke is a dangerous medical emergency that happens when the body can no longer regulate its temperature. Symptoms include confusion, loss of consciousness and hot, dry skin.

If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention right away. Our urgent care can provide a thorough evaluation and treatment to help prevent further complications.

Stay Hydrated

The most important way to stay safe in the summer heat is to hydrate yourself with plenty of water. Try to drink regularly throughout the day, and not just when you’re thirsty. Most people should aim for at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily, but you may need more if you’re active, spend a lot of time outdoors or sweat excessively.

Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol when spending time outdoors, as they can increase your risk of dehydration. Instead, carry a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day. If you’ll be outside for an extended period, consider adding a pinch of salt or an electrolyte mix to help replace what your body loses through sweat.

Plan Around the Heat

Whenever possible, plan outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day, in the morning or late evening. Frequent indoor breaks with air conditioning or under the shade will give your body time to cool down. If you work outdoors, try to gradually increase your time in the heat to help your body adjust.

If you begin to feel dizzy, overly tired or unwell, stop immediately. Head indoors, drink some water and rest in a cool place. Don’t try to push through it. The risk to your health isn’t worth it.  If symptoms aren’t improving indoors, visit our urgent care clinic for evaluation and treatment.

Use Sunscreen Daily

Sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer and makes it harder for your body to cool down. To protect your skin, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day, even when it’s cloudy or overcast. Be sure to apply to all exposed skin, including your face, ears, neck, shoulders and tops of your feet. Don’t forget often-missed spots like the back of your hands and the back of your neck. Reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re sweating or swimming. For best protection, apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before heading outside.
