Riverwalk Holiday Light Display Dazzling in early morning hours
I have been blessed to live for 26 years in what is now known as Southtown, though back in the day it was referred to as Baja King William. I am therefore only a 10-minute easy run to the start of the annual Riverwalk holiday light display.
Several times each week during the holiday season, I alter my route a bit to get my own private viewing of this great display. Believe it or not, I can count on one hand the number of people I see on the runs, who are also out enjoying the lights. Though to accomplish this feat sans crowds, I do hit the pavement at 5:30 AM. Yes, it is dark and some mornings even cold, but it is worth the adventure.
Rather than wait in line on the exit ramp at Commerce off 37 S, I am there alone, except for the occasional park police who I see each morning. Today I trotted over to the recently completed section of the San Pedro Creek Project and WOW!: what a beautiful spectacle.
So, gather your friends or family, or just treat yourself. Get out of bed a bit early and head downtown. You will not have to share the space with crowds of others but can enjoy one of the iconic scenes of the San Antonio holidays in quiet reflection. Afterwards, stop in for a coffee or hot chocolate at one of the many Riverwalk Hotels who will probably just be starting service as you finish.
Happy holidays, and may 2019 bring good health and adventure!
