Five Health Tips to Get More ‘Vida’ From Your Fiesta San Antonio 2017 - Texas MedClinic Urgent Care

From parades, galas and coronations to parties in La Villita, Market Square, University of the Incarnate Word and St. Mary’s University, Fiesta San Antonio’s 10-day celebration of culture and diversity has just about everything for everybody.

1. Get plenty of sleep.

On average, adults need about 7-8 hours of sleep nightly. With all the revelry and fun during the week nights, we go to bed later, still waking for our daily responsibilities of work, child care. Reduced sleep can take a toll on our bodies, making us susceptible to illness and allergy outbreaks. Try keeping a set bed time, and stick to it.

2. Pace yourself.

Easier said than done, we know. If you can stagger events, leaving a few nights in between parties and parades for extra rest, your body will thank you with having more energy and mental awareness.

3. Stay hydrated.

An average adult needs about eight, 8-ounce glasses of water a day. If you are active or in the heat, you need to be drinking more water than average. Bring a water container with you to outdoor events. You can refill at water fountains, and some Fiesta events may have water container refill stations.

If you plan on enjoying alcoholic beverages, drink one glass of water for each alcoholic beverage consumed. It may save you a big head ache in the morning.

4. Wear sunscreen.

For many of us, Fiesta events in April are the first time in the year that we endure full days of outdoor activity in the sun. If you are attending daytime events, use a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 or higher. Apply liberally. Reapply every two hours.

Hats and crowns are popular Fiesta gear. Make sure your hat has a brim, providing ample shade for your face from the sun.

5. Beat the heat.

High temperatures during Fiesta events have been known to rise to 90-95.

Try attending events early in the day or late in the evening, avoiding mid-day heat and large crowds. Wear loose fitting, breathable clothing.
